Carrot market is at a tipping point

20 December 2024 - Linda van Eekeres

Just before Christmas, the carrot market is at a turning point. There are still carrots available from the field, but the end is really in sight. The barns are full. Demand for the holidays has picked up reasonably well. Most buyers are now supplied until the new year. Everything that still had to go to Eastern Europe before Christmas is now also on its way. Belgium and Germany are not on the market, they still have enough in the field themselves. Some is going to Southern Europe, but that is not worth mentioning.

The supply from the field is running out. At the beginning of the new year, everything is expected to have been harvested. As long as carrots are still being harvested, no one will start on carrots from storage. Then the price has to go up for the farmer to cover the costs and still earn something. That is the split we are in now, it is said.

The supply is good, and seems to be bigger this year than last year. According to an insider, growers anticipated that good prices were made and more was grown and the yields are also good. The quality is also generally fine, although it is reported that batches with a firecracker or spot are now emerging from the cell.

What will happen to the price in the new year is the question. Where will the supplier and the buyer find each other? For the time being, the DCA listing remains at €10 to €12 per 100 kilos.
