There is some demand from abroad, but transport is not yet starting in the first full week of the new year because there are no cars available yet, according to an insider. What is going away, is going to Eastern Europe. Germany and Belgium, from where there is usually also demand in this period, are not on the market because they have enough themselves.

The quality is generally good, but now some batches of lesser quality are appearing. There is also carrot with beginning 'rottenness' that has gone into the cooling and they want to get rid of that now.

Due to good yields on average and with the expectation of higher prices later in the season, relatively many carrots have been stored. For those carrots, the grower logically wants to see the extra costs for storage and cooling reflected in the price. That is where the problem lies. The grower reasons, so to speak, 'if I could get €15 two months ago, it should be at least €25 now', while flushers look at the sales price and say that there is little room for the price to rise. In that tension, supply and demand have to find each other somewhere.

The DCA Peen quotation stood at €11 per 100 kilos for five weeks and last week it went up a step to €13,50. This week the quotation will go up again slightly to €16 per 100 kilos.
