At Agrico Research in Bant (Flevoland), the demolition of several outdated laboratories has started today (13 January). This is the starting signal for a renovation that is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
Agrico Research focuses daily on improving the variety portfolio of the potato trading house Agrico. In order to work more efficiently on the development of new varieties and to further strengthen the existing portfolio, demolition and new construction of laboratories is necessary.
The current laboratories are outdated and do not offer enough space. Among other things, the molecular laboratory will be renovated and the capacity of the quarantine laboratory will be significantly expanded. Thanks to modern techniques, Agrico Research expects to be able to combine the right properties for healthy potato cultivation faster and more efficiently.
Director Peter Oldenkamp explains in a press release: "The extra space enables us to conduct more marker research." Oldenkamp also indicates that he can add more targeted properties to seedlings, such as resistances to diseases and improved quality properties. This will make it possible to bring varieties with stacked resistances to, for example, phytophthora to the market more quickly.
The renovation requires an investment of approximately €15 million, the largest in Agrico's history.
