Potatoes are a staple food for millions of people worldwide. In recent months, prices have skyrocketed in some countries. In Russia, potato prices have increased by 90,5% in one year. According to recent reports, there are several factors contributing to this development. Poor harvests due to drought and frost have led to lower production in important agricultural areas. In addition, farmers are struggling with higher costs for fuel, fertilizers and labor. Logistical disruptions and higher transportation costs make it more difficult to efficiently distribute potatoes throughout the country. All these developments have a price-raising effect.

The consequences are noticeable for both consumers and producers. In supermarkets and at markets, prices have risen dramatically, making potatoes less affordable for some households.

Kazakhstan takes action against rising prices
Not only Russia is affected, potato prices have also risen sharply in Kazakhstan. This has led to government intervention in this country. Measures are being taken to stabilize prices and guarantee availability. Kazakhstan is imposing price limits on potatoes to prevent traders from using excessive profit margins. At the same time, the government is stimulating domestic production to reduce dependence on imports and is imposing export restrictions to better supply the domestic market. These measures show how important potatoes are for food security in the region. Kazakhstan is partly dependent on potato imports, and fluctuations in the international market have direct consequences for the country.

Iran also plays a major role in the region’s economy. Geopolitical tensions, sanctions, and changing trade routes can affect the availability and price of food. Because Iran trades heavily with Russia and Kazakhstan, disruptions to that trade could lead to shortages and further price increases.

Growing demand for potato products and starch
Another development, besides the rising potato prices, is the demand for potato products such as potato starch. An increase in imports is expected in 2024, which indicates that the global food market is in motion. This growth in demand indicates a shift in the market, where it is looking for other ways to process and use potatoes.

The EU sanctions on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine are also clearly visible in the export of frozen potato products.
