Quality seed potatoes concerns us all

8 March 2025

The cause of poor emergence of consumption potatoes is often sought in the quality of the seed potatoes supplied. But at least as often the cause lies further down the chain.

Multi-year research by the NAK, commissioned by VAVI, NAO and BO Akkerbouw, has shown that the quality of seed potatoes requires attention throughout the chain. The seed potato grower, the transporter and the consumer grower all have a major influence on the quality and vitality of seed potatoes. The initiative to bring the importance of seed potato quality and the responsibility of seed potato growers, transporters and consumer growers to everyone's attention was created from the Chain Project Improvement of Seed Potato Quality.

Website with practical tips
Growers often think that the way they handle seed potatoes is good. However, there are many areas for improvement. On the website www.zuinigoppootgoed.nl a great deal of practical information is provided on how all parties in the chain (seed potato growers, transporters and consumer growers) can take simple but effective measures that benefit the quality of seed potatoes. In a webinar on seed potato quality, representatives from the sector discuss measures that are easy to implement but have a major impact on a batch of seed potatoes.

Thrifty with seed potatoes? This is how I do it!
Seed potato growers strive for the best quality seed potatoes. After receipt at the consumer grower, it sometimes takes a few weeks before they can be planted. This requires special attention to quality. Three colleagues share their experiences.

Joris van Geel

'Seed potatoes are ready and we can get started right away'
Joris van Geel of the arable farm Reevliet in Hoge Zwaluwe wants to be sure that his seed potatoes are ready when he can go to the field. He has them delivered in February and stores them in the cold store of the celeriac. "That way we keep matters in our own hands."

Lars Machielse

'Seed potatoes are expensive enough to take good care of them'
Lars Machielse in Made always receives his seed potatoes as early as possible. Because from that moment on he has everything in his own hands. "I want the highest possible emergence so I do my best to keep the seed potatoes in good condition."

Freek Boudeling

'I want to have the potatoes in the house on time'
A problem with emergence was the reason for Freek Boudeling in Anna Jacobapolder to take a close look at the storage of his seed potatoes. This led to the cold store for his sprouts getting a second function.
