It is just a bit of a lurch in the carrot. There is demand for one from abroad but it is not much. The quality of the Dutch carrot is a point of attention and the new harvest is also being cautiously looked at.
You now have to search for batches of carrots that are absolutely perfect with a flashlight. 'You don't even have to look hard to find a spot or a rotten bit', according to one washer. The doubtful batches have disappeared. Either it is suitable for rinsing or it is real rubbish that can barely be used as feed. That does not mean that there are no carrots that are good for washer-uppers. In fact, some insiders indicate that we still have a lot of work to do to get rid of everything before the new harvest comes onto the market.
Smooth spring
The new harvest is already being watched with a sideways eye. After wet conditions in the past two years, this spring is going reasonably well in the Netherlands. The second half of June there is almost always a supply of new Dutch carrots and this year that could be one or two weeks earlier. Processors are therefore less inclined to build up some positions. In fact, flushers who have plenty of their own stock are more likely to try to sell some on.
Trade at the grower is fairly calm. Some growers and speculators are still trying to make a move upwards. However, flushers are not going along with that. The DCA Indicative Price for b-carrots remains stable this week at €14 to €15. There is not much trade, however. For c-carrots, it has not been possible to put together a price due to a lack of trade.
