Good storage carrots are starting to run out. After four weeks of remaining stable, the DCA Peen quotation is taking a step up. It is the good quality batches that are finding a buyer.
"You don't want to send away junk anymore," says an insider. There is already a supply of new carrots from abroad, but they are still a lot more expensive. Exports continue, mainly to Poland, but Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Ukraine are also mentioned. An insider does note that the second half of the week was quieter. It remains to be seen how that will develop next week.
The supply of 'workable' carrots is decreasing. There are reports of many batches with a speck, spot or rot in them. A washer indicates that carrots from the old harvest from Germany are also being imported to the Netherlands at the moment. Anyone who still has good carrots in the cold store can therefore ask a bit more, but how much more there is to it remains to be seen. It is indicated that the price of Dutch storage carrots and foreign new carrots should not be too close together, otherwise the choice is quickly made.
The DCA Peen quotation for B-carrots has been stable at €14 to €15 per 100 kilos for the past four weeks. The price is now rising to €14 to €17 per 100 kilos. There is little trade in C-carrots and that is why there is no quotation for them this week. However, the price of what is traded is rising due to a lack of competition. Prices of between €20 and €24 per 100 kilos are being mentioned.
