The chance that MH for the onion and potato sector will be preserved has increased slightly this week. The European Commission has changed the proposal for rejection to approval. This represents a turnaround in the re-registration process.
The switch from status non-inclusion to approval is a step forward in the process, says crop manager Harry Salomons of Certis. But he points out that the sector should not celebrate too early, because there is a "but". 'The committee has attached a strict condition to it. An impurity in the product must be brought down.'
The status change gives the sector more breathing room. 'We are currently looking at the options and how the reduction can be implemented.
We assume that MH will be available next season, and with the proposal for approval, there is a slightly higher chance that the product will still be on the market after the expiry date of October 31, 2017."
Salomons is very happy with it, but remains cautious. 'There is no promise and it is still not certain that it will work. It remains to be seen how the trajectory will turn out. The condition set is in any case decisive for the future.'
