Looking at the price development of onions in European countries, there is no movement of any kind.
In Germany, the price range for yellow seed onions with a medium grade, delivered in Big Bags and collected from the sorting company, remains between 11,00 and 13,00 euros per 100 kg. The last stock measurement from mid-February indicated that there are more onions still in stock. From reports of sales of German onions, it can be concluded that sales are going well in our own country, but that too little sales can be achieved in the export market. As a result, there is no instrument to set the mood and set prices in motion.
After a journey of about 6 weeks, the first New Zealand onions have now arrived in Germany. A large or small stock of German onions does not alter the fact that there are always consumers who aspire to a new harvest of onions over those of current domestically grown onions. The first onions were exported to mainland Europe in week 3 towards Dutch ports; a volume of 260 tons.
There is also a stable price level in Austria. There, the onions are sold ex-grower, sorted and delivered loose in boxes for prices between 9,00 and 13,00 euros per 100 kg. Austrian onion growers provide more than sufficient supply compared to demand. In Austria, sales of onions are also good in their own country, but demand from abroad could grow.
