Countus Agriculture Index

Seed potatoes and onions two extremes in arable income

4 April 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude - 1 reaction

The further weakening of onion prices is responsible for a slight drop in the Countus Arable Farm Index. The index fell by 3,6 points in March. However, the number of points is still at a high level.

Minor changes have been visible in the arable markets over the past 4 weeks. Apart from the onion prices, the crops remained fairly stable. For the Countus Arable Farm Index this means a slight weakening. Week 9 started at 168,8 points and March closed at 165,2 points. Only around the transition 2010/11 and the end of 2006 did the index reach such a high level.

Potatoes stand head and shoulders above other crops

Difficult parquet for the onion market
The onion market has been in an extremely difficult situation for several weeks now. In March, things didn't get better, rather worse, because prices fell even further. From an average of 6 euros per 100 kg to 3 euros per 100 kg in the second half of the month.

There is no movement in the seed potato price. That remains at around 85 euros per 100 kg. Although this is lower than in February this year, the seed potatoes stand head and shoulders above the other crops.

Feed wheat is fairly constant, with prices varying between 174 and 180 euros per tonne. French fries are still able to maintain themselves above the 20 euro limit in March. At the beginning of March, around 22 euros per 100 kg is paid on the futures market. At 20 euros, that is slightly lower in mid-March. However, at the end of the month the contract will again approach 22 euros.

The bintje variety is no longer a benchmark for seed potato growers. The 85 euros is only reserved for a very small group of growers who have not grown under contract or who have previously sold. For the arable index, please take the average price for licensed varieties. These have been between 25 and 40 euros for several years

I don't understand the sense and nonsense of this index at all. What can you do with that now? A bit of whining in the room, and afterwards things just turn out differently than the accountants predict. These gentlemen must do what they are good at, deal with the financial side and leave the market and its operation to the entrepreneurs themselves.
You can no longer respond.
