European countries are still struggling with the sale of onions. Here and there there are differences, but in general the prices do not want to break free from the price range, which they have been stuck in for weeks. New Zealand has already exported more than 100.000 tons of onions. You can read which destinations are most popular in the message below.
Germany
The German onion market continues to broadly develop, as has been the case for weeks. For the most part, Germans are dependent on sales in their own country for onion sales. It is still not possible to create more sales in the export market. Proportionally, there is more pressure on price formation than on sales in the home country. The price range for yellow onions remains between 10 and 12 euros for yellow sowing onions, medium sorting, sorted and delivered in Big Bags, ex sorting company.
It is still difficult to determine to what extent the difficult sales of the old harvest will influence the import of new onions from New Zealand. According to the latest export figures, 11.005 tons of onions are now on their way to Germany, some of which have already arrived. Last year, that volume was 17 tons of onions up to and including week 17.451. It is not possible to indicate how much ultimately went to Germany, via the Dutch and Belgian ports.
Austria
The tone is becoming a little friendlier on the Austrian onion market. There is slightly more interest and sales, both in our own country and abroad. The market is certainly not on fire, because the slightly increased demand is easily met by the abundant supply. Just as in the Netherlands, interest in large onions is greater than in fine size grading. The price range is between 9 and 13 euros per 100 kilos, for sorted onions, delivered loose in boxes, ex works from the grower.
New Zealand
This season, 57.340 tons of onions have now been shipped from New Zealand to mainland Europe, compared to 69.033 tons last season. Exports to the United Kingdom amount to a volume of 2.801 tons, which was a volume of 7.995 tons last year. The total export of New Zealand onions up to and including week 17 is 108.970 tons, compared to 125.941 tons in 2016.
The largest volume has been shipped to Dutch ports so far this season, namely 21.157 tons. Indonesia is the second buyer of New Zealand onions with 19.377 tons. What is striking is the limited volume of onions shipped to Malaysia this year, 828 tons compared to 5.408 tons last year. Japan has purchased significantly more onions this season, 14.707 tons compared to 6.436 tons last year.
