Despite the disappointing onion market, Agrifirm delivered a performance in line with the market with its onion storage pool. The pool price of the 2016 harvest is 7,20 euros per 100 kilos on week 12.
As expected, the pool had to rely mainly on the first sales period. 'The off-land period has been the best moment of sale with a pool price of 9,70 euros per 100 kilos', light commercial relationship manager Arco Amperse van Agrifirm to. The storage pool starts in December and runs until the end of April. 'Up to and including December, the market was still running reasonably well, and exports still looked good. From January the prices fell in steps.'
After Africa stopped buying onions, the market fell rapidly and the mood was significantly less good. Amperse: 'Other destinations cannot fill that gap. Brazil will participate for a while later, at the end of April, but this was not for long.' The coarse onions are still being used for export, but the fine onions are more difficult to sell. The mood hit rock bottom in March.
Soil Levels
It is generally known that onions were shipped for nothing in the Netherlands. "That's typical of this year and very disappointing after you go into a season well and end up at bottom levels. No onion cells were supplied from the pool for zero euros, which benefits the pool result. It is clear that this year we mainly had to rely on the higher levels at the start of the season.'
A large part of the pool participants is located in the Northern Netherlands. If you compare the pool result against the average onion quotations of the Emmeloord trade fair during the term of the pool, Agrifim has achieved a slightly better result. For 30 percent coarse, the fair price Emmeloord is 5,152 euros, 60 percent coarse comes out on average at 5,908 euros per 100 kilos.
