The German onion market is on the threshold of the switch to the new harvest of onions. Some of the onions that have now been delivered from New Zealand are still stored in the storage facilities.
Now that consumer demand for new harvest onions is increasing, more and more retailers are switching over and filling the shelves with new harvest onions.
Later in the season
This week the New Zealand onions are being traded, delivered free of charge to the German packing station in Big Bags, for approximately 64 euros per 100 kilos. In previous years, the switch to the new harvest of onions took place earlier in the season, but due to the large stock of German onions (for the time of year), marketing of our own harvest has continued this season.
This created price pressure on the already imported New Zealand onions. This is now decreasing due to increased demand and sales.
