In onion country, the market seems to be in holiday mode, given the sales pace. As far as the exporters are concerned, the demand may explode, but that does not seem to be the case yet. What's holding the market back?
Last year, the first onion onions were listed on July 19 at a price of €13,50 to €15,50 per 100 kg. The subsequent quotation came with both a kilo quotation and a hectare quotation, €13 to €15,50 and €7.000 to €8.000. Compared to the 2015 harvest year, listing will start in the same week. Onion sets are now being harvested and loaded in several places and an increasing stock can be drawn from.
Sales leave much to be desired, giving the market a peaceful and quiet appearance. For many buyers, the current prices of new harvest onions still seem too high. As a result, sales options are limited and customers have to wait for a more acceptable price level. Because the availability of new harvest onions is increasing every week (there are sufficient onions in boxes for the drying wall), there is some price pressure.
The export of onions last year amounted to 28 tons in week 9.214, compared to 6.013 tons in 2015 and 12.251 tons in 2014. It feels like less onions are being sold at the moment than last year and it is therefore desirable that sales will increase soon.
