On Friday afternoon, July 21, there was good news for Dutch onion growers from Brussels. The many lobbying for the preservation of the drug MH (maleic hydrazide) has a positive effect.
Since November 2016, the use of MH in onion cultivation has been under discussion. The European authorization for the active substance expires on 31 October 2017. This means that the growth regulator may no longer be sold after that date.
lobbying
As a result, a strong lobby has been launched, which now appears to have paid off. The use of MH has been re-approved, which means that the Netherlands' position as market leader appears to be guaranteed.
Modifications
A number of adjustments will have to be made, but that should not diminish the joy of the approval. The good news is that a majority of Member States voted in favor of approval and that should prevail.
