A very large fire at fried onions producer Lion Foods in Sint-Maartensdijk completely reduced the building to ashes on Monday night, November 13. The company was previously known as Denja BV.
The fire service reports that the fire started in the warehouse and quickly spread to the offices and the rest of the building. After the fire alarm came in around 2:30 a.m., the fire service quickly scaled up to a very large fire. Explosions could be heard during the fire from exploding gas cylinders and truck tires. The property should be considered lost. Asbestos-containing particles were released during the fire.
Not for the first time
It's not the first time Lion Foods has faced fire. In 2016, a drying oven caught fire. Firefighters had the fire under control after about an hour and a half. And also in 2005 a fire started in 1 of the ovens, but the fire was quickly extinguished.
Due to the strong wind, the #fire now extended to the company's office #Maartensdijk
