Average yield of onions higher than last season

22 December 2017 - Kimberly Bakker - 12 comments

The average yield of onions this season is higher than last season. In addition, more onions were delivered. This corresponds to the picture of good exports. This is apparent from VTA's first stock inventory for the 2017/2018 season.

The average yield is 55,6 tons per hectare. In 2016 this was 52,7 tons per hectare. Although the differences between the plots were smaller than last year, there are again significant differences this season.

5,5% higher than last season
The minimum is 22 tons per hectare, while the maximum is no less than 93 tons per hectare. On average, the yield per hectare is 5,5% higher than last season.

57,2

your

per hectare is the yield of yellow onions

The yield for yellow onions is 57,2 tons per hectare and for red onions it is 55,4 tons per hectare. Onion sets yielded an average of 45,6 tons per hectare.

Area expansion
With an area expansion of 4,3% (as predicted by Statistics Netherlands), the total production of the reference group will be 10% higher than last season. This would make production 7% higher than the 5-year average.

The higher production also immediately leads to a higher stock. The interim stock is higher than last season and also 2% higher than the 5-year average.

Delivered percentages
In the 2016/2017 season, 31% of the onions had been delivered. This season it is 33,6%. In absolute tons, there is 6,1% more stock among VTA members than last season, which is more than 2% above the 5-year average.

About 22% of this stock has been sold. This percentage was higher for red onions (40%) than for yellow onions (18%). Last year, however, a larger part of the stock had already been sold, so that free stock is now higher (8,3% higher than the 5-year average).

I don't think the minimum is 22 tons/ha but 0 tons/ha
Hybelle 23 December 2017
10 percent more stock than last year, last year more than 60 thousand tons to Poland, this season a few thousand tons! There is indeed commotion on the onion market!

@Hybelle Last year Polish onions headed this way. Not this year. In North Holland less onions than last year. Also long keepers who have already said goodbye

I don't believe any of them, I'm sure there aren't too many onions, just pay attention. Those who sold them, of course, write that there are many.
Food Bank 23 December 2017
Yep, totally agree! There is no more than last year at Christmas. In addition, there is still a part that is only suitable for the sheep or fermenter. Finally, compared to last year, there are more gaps in the global market.

Or trade, or bring to the sheep because there's a germ in it.
Fortunately, you can make the choice yourself!

Don't let it scare Last year same story Went away at the end of May for little but without a sprout

What a negative view of the situation, if you only look at it compared to last year. What I see is that the stock position is exactly the same as in 2015. And then we had prices close to 0,15 euros, which later went up to 0,20 euros. In 2012, there was much more stock than now, and then the prices were even better than now 0,12 euros. Don't get too anxious. Sales are going well, and there are no other countries with large surpluses. They are still onions, of course, but I think they can still reach 0,15 euros this year.
