Inside: Onion Market

Another division in the onion market

12 January 2018 - 2 comments

Wrote a while ago Boerenbusiness about a dichotomy in the onion market. At that time, a distinction was made between good quality onions and lesser onions. A large part of lesser onions have now been cleared and the way up seems to have started in recent weeks. However, a new dichotomy is now emerging.

There is a big difference between the medium grade, fine and coarse onions. The bale prices for the medium grades are starting to come under increasing pressure, because the sales channels for this grade are starting to shrink.

Senegal topic of discussion
On Thursday, January 11, a meeting was held about exports to Senegal. Although nothing concrete has emerged yet, the mood regarding the main buyer of Dutch onions seems mainly negative. It is expected that the gate to Senegal will remain closed in the coming weeks or that only a few onions will be exported to the African country.

Demand from Ivory Coast is declining sharply

Exports to the second buyer of Dutch onions (Ivory Coast) also appear to shrink in the coming weeks. The demand for onions from Ivory Coast is declining sharply and it is expected that the country will not purchase any significant volumes again until March. Exports to Africa are therefore declining across the board, which means there is less need for medium-grade onions in the Netherlands.

On the other hand, the upward trend for large onions has clearly begun. There is a demand for large onions from Spain and Portugal. In the last weeks of December it became apparent that the market for large onions was becoming friendlier, and just before New Year's Eve the first batches were sold for amounts above €10. cooked.

Emmeloord notes €10
For the first time since week 38, 1 of the 3 regional stock exchanges records a price with 2 decimal places. The Emmeloord exchange quotes €6 to €10 for large onions. Emmeloord also notes a small plus of €0,25 for fine onions. The stock exchanges of Middenmeer and Goes are both trading unchanged. When all 3 regional quotations are compared, the fine onions are quoted €5 to €7 and the coarse onions are €6 to €10.

The difference between medium and coarse grading is clearly visible in the bale prices. Where the medium sizing remains at the same level and comes under increasing pressure, the bale price for large onions increases. For the 60 to 80 grade, the bale prices are €14 to €15 and for the 80 millimeter plus onions the bale prices are €19 to €20.The difference between the medium sorting and coarse sorting is clearly visible.
