The dichotomy between fine and coarse onions only seems to be getting bigger. There are still plenty of export destinations for coarse onions. However, the bale price is still omitted.
February is traditionally a quiet month in the onion sector. With carnival, the Fruit Logistica fair in Berlin and the disappearance of many export destinations, it is often a month of searching. However, this year there are some bright spots for the beautiful and large batches of onions.
Bright spots
Brazil reported a few weeks ago and the country is importing Dutch onions at a small scale. These are not huge quantities, but a lot more onions are already being exported to Brazil than 1 year ago in February.
Countries such as Spain and Italy have also reported large onions in the Netherlands and that is not always the case in February. Stocks in Eastern Europe appear not to be as large as previously estimated, which will create additional demand for onions.
However, the export destinations for Dutch onions are looking for large onions. It is currently still very difficult to find a sales area for the medium and fine grading.
Bale prices
Despite the fact that there is demand from sales areas that do not report annually (in these quantities) during this period, the bale price remains stable. To raise onion prices to a higher level, it would be nice if there was more room in bale prices.
| Bale prices week 7 | Low | High |
| Under 50 millimeters | €9 | €9 |
| 45 to 6 millimeters and 5 to 50 millimeters | €10 | €11 |
| 60 millimeters upwards | €13 | €14 |
| 80 millimeters upwards | €19 | €19 |
Dichotomy
Despite the stable bale prices, prices for coarse/beautiful onions are rising slightly. There is also more demand for this, compared to a few weeks ago. The regional stock exchanges in Emmeloord and Goes both recorded a plus at the top of the quotation for large onions. Both exchanges quote €6,50 to €10 for large onions (60% increase).
The 30% to 60% large onions remain stable in the quotations of the Middenmeer and Goes stock exchanges. In Emmeloord the quotation for this size of onion is reduced by €0,25. This seems to further increase the division between coarse and fine onions.
The average stock market listing is roughly 60% over the years.
