The Dutch onion market is causing confusion. The exporters who were at Fruit Logistica in Berlin in week 6 came home with a negative feeling. There would be nothing more of this season. However, new export figures show that this should not be taken too literally.
Based on preliminary information, the export figures for week 7 amount to 17.018 tons of onions. Subsequent information results in an increase of 3.555 tons. A total of 808.559 tons were exported this season, compared to 752.681 tons last season. That means a plus of 55.878 tons, or a plus of 7,4%. The counter for calendar year 2018 currently stands at 139.753 tons, compared to 146.231 tons in 2017.
Who took the onions?
Brazil was the largest buyer in week 7, with a purchase of 2.887 tonnes. The country is followed by Guinea, which had a decrease of 1.757 Dutch tons. Third place went to Malaysia, with a purchase of 1.541 tons of onions from the Netherlands. Great Britain is in fourth place with 1.495 tons and Mauritania is in fifth place with 1.345 tons.
Brazil's purchase (at 8.900 tons) is 187% ahead of last year, when more than 7 tons of onions were exported up to and including week 3.000. Great Britain is 27% behind last season's schedule and has a total of 7 tonnes up to and including week 62.518.
