The export of onions is going better than expected, and even tends to be sublime. This can be deduced from the latest export figures for week 8. Where do the figures come from?
The figures show that calendar year 2018 is turning out better than calendar year 2017. Until now, 2017 was ahead in terms of export total, but that has now changed. The provisional export volume of week 8 amounts to 19.723 tons of onions, 4.926 tons more than in the same week in 2017. The volume of subsequent information is striking. That concerns 5.348 tons and is relatively large.
The biggest customers
Africa, South America, Europe and the Far East are involved in the export figures of week 8. Mauritania, for example, purchased 8 tons of Dutch onions in week 2.743, which means that the country is good for a volume of 46.293 tons this season. Brazil imported 2.163 tons, bringing the season total to 11.064 tons.
Great Britain is in third place, buying 1.840 tons, bringing this season's total to 65.410 tons. The Gambia and Malaysia accounted for the purchase of 1.533 tons and 1.413 tons of Dutch onions respectively. Spain is in 8th place, which lost more than 770 tons due to the disappointing size and quality.
Performance of size
Based on recent figures, the average weekly export figure is 26.050 tons, compared to 22.572 tons in the past season. The 'lead' has increased to 66.153 tons. This is a major achievement this season.The onion export of recent years (up to and including week 8).
