Did stock Emmeloord have a blackout?

16 March 2018

For onion growers who currently still have onions in storage, it is important to take a good look at the quality, size and color. Despite the calm mood, the parties at the top of the market are currently in demand. These are onions of good quality, size and colour. In Europe, a number of parties have come forward that can get along well with the parties at the top of the market, namely Spain, Italy, the Balkans and Germany.

For parties that do not meet the 3 requirements, the demand is somewhat calmer. Especially at the beginning of the week (week 11) it was quiet. As the week progressed, more and more onion trucks were spotted in the Netherlands. The recent export figures (week 8) were again good for the time of year with 19.723 tons of onions. Week 9 and week 10, like the beginning of this week, were quieter. Demand picked up again in the second half of the week.

At the moment it is not enough

In order for onion prices to rise, exports will have to continue in the coming weeks. There are positive points of departure due to the demand from Europe. However, the demand will then have to continue, because at the moment it is still insufficient.

Are the prices for coarse onions falling?
Where the regional exchanges Middenmeer and Goes quoted irresponsibly for 60% upwards, exchange Emmeloord recorded a minus of € 0,25. However, this does not mean that the prices for large onions are less good. The price level is similar to previous weeks. From time to time, a little extra is paid for the best parties. Those trades drive the top of the quotes.

In Emmeloord and Middenmeer, unchanged figures were recorded for the 30% to 60% large onions this week. An increase of €0,25 was seen in Emmeloord. This upward trend could confirm the fact that the middle sorting  goes away more easily.

If we compare all 3 regional exchanges, then €30 to €60 is quoted for the 4% to 7,50% coarse onions and €60 to €6 for the 11% coarse onions. The bale prices are comparable to the previous weeks. Certain destinations only pay a little more for the most beautiful onions.

Starting points
In mid-March, there are a number of positive points of departure from the export. It is now important for growers to take a critical look at their onions. There is sufficient demand for onions at the top of the market. Onions with a lower quality, size or color are more difficult to dispose of.
