The stock inventory for onions, which the VTA growers' association carried out in April, shows that members surveyed have more onions in storage than was the case last year. More of this volume has been sold, which means the free stock is lower.
The regular group of participants in the stock inventory have now delivered 69% of their stock of onions. Last year on the same date it was 70%. In absolute tonnes, 8,5% more was delivered. Nevertheless, the absolute stock is almost 14% higher this season.
Normal sales
Almost three quarters (71%) of the onions in storage can still be sold freely. That was 83% last season. In absolute tonnes the difference is smaller at around 3% and approximately equal to the 5-year average. The figures do not lead to any major surprises, writes VTA. According to the organization, growers wonder which part is suitable for 'normal' sales.
Fewer free red onions
The VTA growers have delivered on average slightly more red than yellow seed onions. This year, 73% of the red onions have been delivered, compared to almost 80% last season. That percentage is exactly the same for yellow onions. The free onion stock of yellow onions is also higher than that of red onions.
