Inside: Onion Market

Quality determines the end of the season

27 April 2018

There has been a dichotomy in the market for months. The difference in quality ensures a wide spread in the market. There will still be a demand for high-quality, coarse onions for the rest of the season. However, due to the stocks at the processors, the onion market didn't really take off this week.

There have been few transactions on the onion market this week. Due to the fact that the trade took a position 2 weeks ago and the (temporary) demand from Brazil has been hedged, the trade is not eager to buy this week and its own stocks are used up first. The fact that the boats to Brazil should be full this week does not mean that they will no longer come to the market at all. It remains a difficult sales area to predict.

Destinations for Dutch onions
The demand for good and large onions will continue until the end of the season. There are destinations for large onions from various directions. It is a more difficult story for the lower quality onions. There has been a division on the market for a long time, with the distinction between good and inferior onions becoming increasingly greater. For growers who still have onions in the shed, it is important to take a critical look at the quality of the onions.

It would be a welcome boost for the lower quality onions if Eastern Europe, and Poland in particular, would gain a stronger foothold in the market. There is currently some demand from Eastern Europe, but for very low prices. Due to the cultivation and harvest problems earlier this season, there is the hope that Eastern Europe will soon enter the market in the Netherlands, but for the time being there are no concrete indications of this.

Exports to Mauritania will have to be put on hold for the time being. Because the market is packed, the country has imposed an import ban on Dutch onions until May 15, 2018.

Red onions
The export of red onions is currently reasonable. However, there is a lot of supply on the market and there are also large stocks of red onions during processing. This week the Emmeloord stock exchange quotes €14,50 to €18 for the red 60% large onions.

While the Emmeloord stock exchange was unchanged this week, Middenmeer and Goes showed a decline. Middenmeer records a minus of €0,50 for the 30% to 60% and also records a minus of €0,25 for the 60%.
