The recently published export figures for onions show a striking buyer in the top 5: Spain. In the end, however, week 16 was once again shaped by Brazil. Which countries supported the export figure more?
The export figure in week 16, based on provisional figures, amounts to 19.231 tonnes. It was also this week Brazil that was firmly pulling the export cart. The country has thus achieved a provisional purchase of 4.025 tonnes. The total purchase for this season provisionally amounts to 20.632 tons; in the 2016/2017 season, the total purchase amounted to 29.903 tons.
Second place is for Britain, with a purchase of 2.473 tons of onions. The seasonal purchase increases to 84.338 tons, compared to 2016 tons of onions last season (2017/113.762).
Spain
The was special Spanish purchase of Dutch onions. The country took fifth place in week 16 (with 910 tonnes). Spain does not have the quality and size that they normally produce this season, which is why they have already imported more than 16.800 tons of Dutch onions this season. That was only 2016 tons in the 2017/6.689 season.
Weekly purchase
The average weekly purchase for this season currently stands at 24.385 tons. A total of 16 tons of onions were exported (up to and including week 975.432). For calendar year 2018 the counter stands at 306.626 tons, last year it was 280.924 tons.
