The storage onion pool of the Flevoland Uienpool Foundation realizes a net price of €2017 per 8,40 kilos for the 100 harvest. This price is determined on the basis of the average median of the marketing year. This fell in week 13, when half of the onions had been delivered.

The price includes weighing costs and a compensation of €250 is also paid when the onions are grown and sold via Global Gap. Pool chairman Evert Brommer notices that there is more demand for onions grown via Global Gap. Last year the pool price was €8,20 per 100 kilos, half of the onions had already been delivered in week 4.

Hope for better
Pool chairman Evert Brommer: "When you look at the onion market, the price is not necessarily bad. However, it is also not a price that makes us happy. The long-term average is above this amount and I therefore hope that the price before harvest 2018 will be better."

The quality of the onions was very good this year. Before it got wet, all the onions were almost inside. Only some parties around Biddinghuizen, which had a lot of rain, had to be closed off earlier. "Because the quality was so good, there were no problems with sales." On average, the tare percentage was 6,6%, slightly less than last year.

Stable strategy
Onion pool Flevoland is maintaining its strategy of selling 25% of the stock every 2 months. In fact, the pool sells spread over the sales season and therefore also spreads the risk. This strategy will also be maintained this year.

Brommer also noticed this year that demand picked up again in April after the dip in February. "Yet the price did not recover because there were simply too many onions." Sales in 2017 were virtually identical to sales in 2016. The upcoming harvest is developing well, says Brommer. However, the places where extremely heavy rain has fallen become visible. It is also now being irrigated due to the drought.
