What will drought do to onion prices?

2 July 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 23 comments

The onion prices of the 2017 harvest were not what was expected. Now that it is gradually becoming drier, speculation about higher onion prices is also breaking out.

Last season showed that there were a lot of onions, and that resulted in a bad price in many cases. However, in 2018 the acreage decreased NOT ALLOWED, bringing the total onion area to 35.200 hectares. In addition, the acreage for seed onions decreases by almost 4%.

It is striking that arable farmers are growing more onion sets this year. The surface increases to 9.140 hectares, a plus of 17%. Still, there is hope that the price for the 2018 harvest will improve. This has everything to do with the current drought.

However, many are cautious: "If it rains next month, there could still be a big harvest." Time to gauge the mood. What do you expect from the prices for the 2018 harvest? This concerns the average onion price; we do not specify on the land, short or long storage onions.

How is the harvesting going at the moment, the machines get the onions into the swath without any problems.
Who has sold old onions in the last 2 days and what is the price paid for that?

Onion sets price is very disappointing. 17 to 18 € That with these circumstances. Yields of 35 to 40 tons. Irrigating. Can a farmer never earn anything again? It appears so.

why are you selling them for a price you don't like?

Get really expensive, just no yield seed onions start to iron and onion sets are dead in the ground. The late onion sets very bad stop at 25 tons. And this is not only in the Netherlands, also Belgium, Germany and France, so the whole of the eu. I am sure that these are the last tenders with a 1 in front. Nature does its job well, largest export ever
boonions 8 July 2018
dream on.. don't get expensive
Exporter 8 July 2018
Onions (unfortunately) are not expensive because it is too dry here, there must be a lot of demand from countries where the consumption is (much) higher than the local production. Surely people should know that by now!?

what kind of a cold answer is that, Mr. exporter. They can get expensive for many more reasons.

Thrips drought no yield now only sales, and the weather is all over the globe (la Nina is such a beautiful natural phenomenon), so that sales will come now a buyer who does think of his farmers.

Exporter 8 July 2018
The market asks for coarse onions and they probably won't come, so too many fine onions then you know it... that's how it will go, who doesn't get it?

Next year Drenthe will no longer have a moisture problem in the onions I just read in the climate agreement that they will flood everything there, just like the lowest part of the NOP

and in large areas of Brabant, we already had a foretaste in 2016.
