Wiskerke Onions has set a basic pool price of €7,30 per 100 kilos. The onions in the speculation pool, on the other hand, were paid better. Wiskerke also suffered greatly from the large supply of onions.
In the speculation pool, the average price was €8,50 per 100 kilos. In that pool the average tare percentage was higher (7,3%) than in the basic pool (6,89%). The price difference between the two pools is caused by the size. It was lower in the southwest than in the north.
Early sales excellent
"Sales were fine until February. Then they declined. We also felt the absence of Russia on the onion market. We need that country for the sales of medium-sized onions," says Chayenne Wiskerke of Wiskerke Onions. Yet more than 8% more onions were sold, and these were sold to a larger number of countries. Most of it was deposited in the first part of the season.
The growers understand that it was a difficult year. The hope is that the new season will bring a better price. "In the southwest of the country, the onions are in less good shape, compared to the polder," says Wiskerke. "The situation elsewhere in Europe is also important. We now have to ensure that we receive the onions properly."
