The 2018/2019 export season seemed to get off to a brisk start, but that could be turned into a flying start with the latest input. It is even raining records again. What are those records, and which customers stand out?
De first results of the new season (up to and including week 29) were announced last week and have been adjusted upwards this week. The export data for weeks 27 to 29 have been increased by 2.155 tons. This sets a new record, because so many onions have never been exported in the first 3 weeks of the season.
Whether this also applies to week 30 will have to be determined in due course. The provisional export figure now stands at 14.921 tonnes. Together with the information provided, the counter for this season stands at 54.234 tons, which means an average of 13.558 tons per week. For calendar year 2018, the export figure now stands at 533.451 tons, compared to 2017 tons in 495.292.
Largest customers
The leader of the list of customers is striking. It is at the top Senegal, which, according to the first figures, accounts for the purchase of 2.128 tons. The country has still not indicated when it will open its borders to Dutch onions, so these onions were shipped on spec in the hope of being the first when the country does give the green light.
Ivory Coast and Guinea are in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Ivory Coast purchased 2.005 tons of Dutch onions and Guinea imported 1.780 tons. Great Britain (1.233 tons) and Gambia (1.158 tons) are two other major customers. Sales went to 2 countries in week 30, with Oman (60 kilos) coming in at the bottom. The export figures of onions up to and including week 30 (over the years).
