Another meeting was held on Thursday, August 16, to discuss the opening of the border with Senegal. It was discussed that the border will probably not open until September 12. In addition, there are more onions in the hinterland than initially thought. It is therefore quite possible that Senegal will still have enough of its own harvest after September 12 and that Dutch exports will have to take a standstill for a longer period.

In the meantime, a boat floats off the coast of Dakar. From the most recent export figures it has emerged that 29 tonnes of onions have been loaded for Senegal up to and including week 2.128. We are now in week 33, which means there is a chance that more onions have left for Senegal. If these boats are not allowed to be moored, other destinations in Africa will have to be found. This will not benefit market forces for these destinations.

Search for alternatives
The image of Dutch onions is clear; In many places the yields are low and the size selection is fine. High prices are mentioned, causing various export destinations to look for alternatives. China in particular is trying to fill a gap in the market. Onion cultivation is popular in growing areas where a lot of garlic is originally grown. Onions are now actively offered from this region.

All in all, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding exports. This ensures that the processing is currently ongoing quiet holds at the onion market. Before the processing company starts purchasing onions at high prices, they first want to have more certainty about exports and the possibilities.
