VTA's trial harvests show that the average yield in the onions is almost 33% lower than last season. The average yield is 41,4 tons per hectare, compared to 60,5 tons per hectare last season.
It must be mentioned that the differences are very large. On 1 plot only 6,8 tons per hectare was harvested, while on another plot almost 84 tons per hectare was harvested. The 2018 yield is far below 5-year average, which amounts to just under 60 tons per hectare.
Difference between north and south
The differences are also clearly visible between the various regions. In the north of the country the average yield is 49,4 tons per hectare, while in the south of the country it remains at 27,8 tons per hectare.
Of these already meager yields, the percentage of large onions is also very small. On average, the percentage of 60 millimeters upwards is 35,7%, compared to 53,4% last season. That was also less than in previous years.
Differences in coarseness
There are also differences in coarseness per region. In the north of the Netherlands the percentage of large onions is approximately 45,5%, while in the south of the country this is about 23,9%. The figures are based on 109 samples and a deduction percentage of 15% for spray marks, headlands and the like.
