There is considerable demand for early carrots, due to low yields in Northern Germany, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. The early carrot harvest has been brought forward in many places due to the lower supply and good demand.
Because the harvest of early carrots is going so well, there is a possibility that a gap will arise in the transition from early carrots to storage carrots. The carrot growers also realize this and therefore in some cases choose to hold on to the carrot. This ensures that prices rise slightly or remain stable at a high level.
The prices for carrots vary from €25 per 100 kilos to €30 per 100 kilos (coarser C/D carrots). That the prices have been at one for so long remain at a high level standing is unique. The quality of the early carrots is generally very good.
Start of the harvest
The harvest is now also underway in the Flevopolders. According to Marc Versprille, cultivation advisor at Delphy, the carrot in this area seems a bit shorter than normal and that does not benefit the yield. Yields are also affected by (in addition to drought) mildew and alternaria.
