Most of the onions have now been harvested; it is estimated that 95% of the onions are grown in the field. Both in the Netherlands and in the rest of Europe the yield is enormously disappointing. This makes the mood bad fixed. Growers keep the barns closed unless traders offer the top price.

However, the processors and traders are keeping quiet on the onion market. Lots are purchased here and there, but stocks are mainly kept low.

Bale prices up
Exports have been bubbling along in recent weeks. In the previous 2 weeks it was quiet on the export market, but for next week 2 boats are planned for Africa. Bale prices have increased a step for almost all grades. For sizes 45 to 65 millimeters, the onions are sold for €30 and for sizes 50 to 70 millimeters this is sometimes even €33 to €34.

The regional fairs also show a steady market. On the stock exchange in Emmeloord, the quotation for 60% large onions is €26 to €32. The quotation on the other exchanges remains unchanged. The Emmeloord and Middenmeer stock exchanges also indicate a fixed mood. This means that demand is greater than supply.

Caring for quality
All in all, there are many positive things to say about price formation on the market. The problem, however, is the quality. The extreme drought in combination with frequent irrigation has created a special growing season. For example, there are various parties with fusarium and bacterial problems.

Moreover, growers wonder whether the anti-germination effect has helped. The problems with germination are not too bad at the moment, but with the fine sorting there is the fear that problems with germination may occur later in the season. It is therefore important for growers to keep a close eye on the quality of the onions.
