The regional fairs in Emmeloord and Goes have presented a quotation for onions from the shed for the first time this season. Prices go up in all sizes.
The mood on the market is and will remain stable for the time being. There are too few onions in the Netherlands and the rest of it Europe, exports are continuing well and the bale prices took a small step in the right direction last week. The only question now is to what extent the sales destinations want to participate in the Dutch bale prices and to what extent quality will play a role in this season.
Average exports
Exports are currently moving up and down; in particular, the weeks in which full boats are sent to Africa provide a boost in export figures. In the other weeks it is a bit quieter. That is why it is good to look at the average export figures.
This is just above 10 tonnes over the past 28 export weeks (week 37 to week 20.000). Considering the total number of onions available in the Netherlands, this is one excellent export average.
First quotation for onions from storage
The regional fairs Goes and Emmeloord recorded onions from storage for the first time this season this week. Price-wise, the quotations have made the transition from field to onions from storage, which can be seen from the fact that all grades are higher.
Most growers have fine onions this year and prices are also rising slightly at the moment. Goes quotes €0 to €30 for the 16% to 22% large onions, which is a plus of €1. Emmeloord quotes €20 to €25 for the same sorting, which is an increase of €3.
The 30% to 60% large onions at the Goes fair amount to €22 to €27 and in Emmeloord this size range amounts to €25 to €30. The 60% large onions in Goes cost €27 to €31 and in Emmeloord the range amounts to €30 to €34.
The first quotations for onions from storage are at a very high level due to the special growing season. For comparison: the first quotation in Emmeloord in 2017 (week 43) was €30 to €60 for 6% to 7% large onions and €60 to €6,50 for 8,50% large onions.
