Can onion processors go on holiday in March?

12 October 2018 - 13 comments

Things are going pretty fast with the onion stock in the Netherlands. The low yield and strong exports ensure that, if this pace continues in the coming period, all onions will have been exported in March.

The most recent export figure (week 38) is the best export week of this season. The provisional figures show that 26.964 tonnes were transported in that week. This volume is more than excellent, considering the number of onions available in the Netherlands this year. With the exception of last year, when a record was set, this season's total volume is ahead of previous years.

The exporters therefore continue to perform well. On the other hand, little account seems to be taken of the fact that Dutch onions should still be available after New Year's Eve. If processors take it easy, with a view to 2019, someone else will buy the onions.

Will there be enough onions left after New Year's Eve? If we assume a weekly export of between 20.000 and 25.000 tons, then approximately 575.000 tons will have been exported at the end of the year. This also includes onion sets that were exported at the beginning of this season.

If we then assume domestic consumption of 100.000 tons of onions, plus 100.000 tons of onion onions that are processed on the industrial market, we will have just under 250.000 tons left for export after the New Year.

Concerns about anti-germination effect
De quality problems have not been too bad to date. However, there are concerns about onions where the anti-germination effect has not helped. Because the onions arrived dry, the risk of baldness is much greater. Many long-term keepers therefore opt for safety and try to dispose of their onions faster than they are normally used to.

The fact that there are hardly any large onions in the south-west of the country is evident from the stock exchange listing in Goes. Because there are too few transactions for the 60% upward, the stock exchange in Goes has not issued a quotation in this size sorting. Furthermore, the scholarship prices made a big step this week.

Size sorting listing
0% to 30%, from the shed €18 to €26
30% to 60%, from the shed €23 to €30
60% up, out of the shed €30 to €35
