Onion yields even lower than expected

Many people already assumed that the seed onion harvest in the Netherlands would be at least 33% lower. The preliminary harvest estimate by Statistics Netherlands, however, even shows that this is 44% below the level of last year.

The gross yield is 811.392 tons and the hectare yield is according to the figures at 32 tons. This means that the yield per hectare is 23,7 tons lower than last year (-43%), when it came to 55,7 tons per hectare. 

Contrast with the year 2017
The total yield is 0,8 million tons and was achieved with an area of ​​25.367 hectares. The acreage was slightly higher in 2017, at 26.679 hectares. However, it should be noted that the yield in the Netherlands was at the highest level ever last year.

The estimates from the sector amounted to a lower yield of 25% to 30% to 40%. Elsewhere in Northwest Europe, the yields lie also considerably lower† It was recently announced that England expects a 40% decrease and that Germany is harvesting 35% less onions.
