The amount to be paid out for the yellow and red onions in Agrifirm Plant's ex-land pool is the best result since it was founded in 2013. It is the first time that a result of more than €20 has been recorded for the yellow seed onions.
The pool price that Agrifirm Plant for yellow onions publishes, comes to €21 per 100 kilos. That of red onions ends up at €29,40 per 100 kilos. This means that the off-shore pool has been able to benefit from a rising market. This started around €15 and ended at €25 per 100 kilos, the cooperative writes. On top of the pool price, Agrifirm members receive a member benefit of €1 per tonne.
Advantages with lower yield
The result is in stark contrast to 2017, when €4 per 100 kilos was paid for yellow onions and €10 per 100 kilos for red onions. The exceptional season was positive for the progress of the harvest. An average of 40 tons per hectare was harvested, compared to more than 60 tons last year. It is disadvantageous for growers, but it has helped ensure that logistics ran smoothly, according to the growers.
The difference in yield is just as large, with (converted) a gross yield of €8.400 per hectare. That was €2.400 last year. However, the average of 40 tons per hectare will not be recognizable to every grower. Agrifirm also writes this.
Extreme fluctuations in yield
The participants in the off-shore pool come from all parts of the country. The reports about quality and yield are therefore very variable. The variation is enormous. In Zeeland the result varies from 0 to 25 tons per hectare, with some plots being plowed under. In Flevoland this ranges from 20 to 50 tons per hectare. Limburg also scored low with less than 30 tonnes. Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland have done relatively well, given the circumstances. In addition to a high(er) yield, the onions have good color and quality. Tare hardly plays a role.
The high result lifts the 5-year average of the pool for yellow onions to €10,58 per 100 kilos. That was €9,24 per 100 kilos after last year. It is difficult to make a comparison with the stock exchange price during that period, because the quoted prices vary widely (depending on the gross percentage).
Compare with stock market quotes
The Emmeloord stock exchange quotes an average of €0 per 30 kilos for 18,08% to 100% large onions in the export period. The 30% to 60% coarse category comes to an average of €22,33 per 100 kilos. These figures are slightly different for Beurs Goes. There the 0% to 30% coarse cost €16,91 and 30% to 60% coarse €20,91.
