The onion market was mainly last week blazing hot and many batches were sold by processors that week. Good exports and higher bale prices ensure that the mood among the trade has become much stronger.

In order to also have access to onions after the turn of the year, (almost) all processors have entered the market in recent weeks to buy onions. This has created a hectic market, in which the processors have tried with all their might to get their hands on onions.

Is the biggest hectic over?
As a result, onion prices were able to make a big step in a short period of time. The hectic pace now seems to have passed, but large amounts of onions are still being bought. Trading is mainly done in the period January and February.

The question is, however, how many onions will still be available after this 'wave'. For many growers, these high prices are the reason to say goodbye to their onions. Moreover, nobody knows how the extreme conditions during the growing season will turn out in storage.

A number of boats were also loaded this week for the  export towards Africa. As a result, a considerable volume will be exported this week. The most recent export figure (that of week 44) comes out at 20.241 tons. On average, the weekly export amounts to 21.658 tons.

Unique stock exchange listing
The regional stock markets, like the farmer prices, have made significant strides this week. The quotation in Goes stood out, because it was worth no less than €30 to €60 for the 35% to 45% of coarse onions. This is a plus of €10,50. It is unique that his big plus is noted in 1 week.

The other quotations also show sharp increases (+€4 to +€6,50). If all odds are placed next to each other, the finest sort will pay €25 to €40, the 30% to 60% coarse will pay €32 to €45 and the 60% coarse will pay €37 to €45.

What is also special about the quotations is that the quotation for yellow seed onions is higher than the quotation for red seed onions. The demand for red onions (from exports) is a lot quieter than the demand for yellow onions. As a result, the prices for red onions have not made the same jumps as the yellow onions.

The quotations in Goes show an increase.
