Despite the fact that onion prices are currently rising sharply (after the period of the short storage pool), the short storage pools have also been able to benefit from the good market. Purchaser Remko Wilms of Waterman Onions about the results of the short storage pool of Flevo Onions.
This year the short storage pool ran from week 42 to week 48 and yielded a price of €31,27 per 100 kilos. "Nothing goes up or down there anymore, because the price includes Global Gap and pool costs. There was too little difference in size to pay out the parties differently. All parties fell approximately between 35% to 50% size," says Wilms.
High tare percentage
"The result is satisfactory, especially when you compare it with the ex-land prices of around €20 per 100 kilos. Short storage has therefore been well rewarded this season," he continues.
It is striking that the tare percentage is quite high (7,4%). Also in view of the fact that the onions are generally fine. According to Wilms, the short storage pool is a nice pool for the participants, because there is plenty of demand from Asia and Africa during this sales period. The latter is also a great opportunity to more easily depose the lesser parties.
Long storage pool
Flevo Onions' long storage pool may further benefit from the high prices. "We have tried to keep the better parties in custody. The troubled parties have generally already been deposed."
The quality is a concern, because there is a lot of fusarium. "That is not unexpected in an extreme year like this." The seriousness only became apparent during storage, because the harvest was done fairly early. There are also many germ problems. Wilms estimates that approximately 25% of the parties have germination problems. "As a pool you cannot speculate at current prices with a batch of questionable quality."
