21 December 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Everyone knows that the onion supply is extremely low. VTA's first stock inventory also confirms this picture. The stock of free onions is currently even 63,5% lower than last season around this time.

The average net yield among the VTA members is 37,7 tons per hectare. In 2017, that was still 55,6 tons per hectare. The net yield is therefore even lower than what emerged from the trial harvestings (41,4 tons per hectare). It means that the average yield is 32,2% lower than last season.

The yield for yellow onions was 37,2 tons per hectare, while for red onions it was 39 tons per hectare. The onion sets had an average yield of 38,9 tons per hectare.

A large part of the stock has already been sold. About 53% of the stock has been sold, while this is 42% for red onions. Normally about 25% is sold at this time of year. The stock of free onions is therefore 63,5% lower.
