After a period of formidable export figures, the volume in week 49 was considerably lower than in previous weeks. Where do the numbers come from?
The most recent export figures (those from week 49) herald the start of a quiet period on the onion market. In that week, the provisional figure is 15.365 tons of onions. That is almost half of the export volume of week 48, in which the best export figure of this season (30.660 tons).
The peak weeks
Week 43 to week 48 were the peak weeks in the onion export. The previous buying round took place during this period, in which onion prices made significant strides and many onions were purchased. However, from week 49 it is a lot quieter.
It is striking that especially the major pioneers from Africa bought a lot less onions. Partly due to the lack of large volumes from Africa and the calm around the holidays, there is little going on in the export market this week.
Season total
The additional information (2.780 tons) puts the seasonal total at 524.291 tons, bringing the average weekly export to 22.795 tons of onions. In week 49, the largest buyer was again Senegal, with 4.565 tons. This country is followed by Ivory Coast (2.487 tons) and Great Britain (1.213 tons). Only these 3 destinations purchased more than 49 tons in week 1.000.
