New Zealand is doing good business with onions

New Zealand onion exporters have had the wind at their back this season. This certainly also applies to sales to mainland Europe.

Up to and including week 14, New Zealand has exported 90.871 tons of onions, which is 28.598 tons more than last year. It is also 5.328 tons more than in 2017. However, in the years 2014 and 2016 the export much further in this period, when the figures were 93.820 tonnes and 96.892 tonnes respectively.

Europe is important
The Netherlands is the most important destination for onions from New Zealand. With 23.074 tons of onions, the Netherlands accounts for more than 25% of the total exported volume. In addition, the Netherlands is importing 5.063 tons more this season than last year. In total, Europe imports approximately 68.700 tons, which is 75% of the total volume.

In addition to the Netherlands, Germany is also the other European destination that is major in onion purchases this season. To date, Germany has imported 14.187 tons, compared to 10.405 tons last year. The other European destinations amount to a decrease of 8.784 tons, compared to 1 tons 2.819 year ago.

Indonesia is a big player
Outside Europe, Indonesia is also a major buyer of New Zealand onions this season. The country imported a volume of 8.479 tons, but this is less than last year (9.951 tons). The country is followed by the Pacific Islands, which have a decrease of 5.472 tons. Last year that was slightly more: 5.581 tons.
