End of onion stock is in sight

19 April 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

The end of the onion stocks is in sight. Most of the stock that is still in the sheds has already been sold. This is apparent from the latest stock inventory of the United Growers Arable Farming (VTA).

From the data of VTA shows that on Monday 1 April 86% of the harvest was delivered. In a 'normal' season, the percentage on that date is around 70%. In addition, it appears that 53% of the current stock has been sold, compared to 71% last season.

Little to offer
This season, only 6,6% of the entire onion harvest is available as free stock. This is striking, given that the harvest was 35% lower than last year. In recent seasons, an average of 20% of the harvest was still freely available at this time of year.

In absolute tons, the onion stock is about 70% lower than last season on 1 April. The free onion stock in tons is 78% lower than last year.
