These days, the lists of processors and traders with growers with free onions only contain a few names. With these growers it has been quiet in the yard for the last 2 weeks. In addition, the high prices ensure that exports do not run very fast.
After a huge increase in bale prices, they have stabilized over the past week. There are several destinations where the onions have run out, and these are the destinations that are willing to pay the high bale prices. A number of export destinations have also switched to the new harvest. These are either expensive alternatives (New Zealand onions) or cheaper alternatives of lower quality (Egyptian onions).
Because there are export destinations that are dropping out and because exporters are trying to spread their onion supplies as long as possible, there is currently few exports. It must be said that there are of course only few onions left to export.
Little speculation
High prices are asked for the free onions that are still available. However, the speculative aspect seems to have disappeared from the market. At these levels, there are few traders and processors who will take a gamble by buying onions above bale prices.
The regional stock exchange in Emmeloord is the only stock exchange that is currently still listed. They equalize the 30% to 60% coarse onions and the 60% upwards. €55 to €60 is quoted for both categories.
