The onion market is currently in the final weeks of the Dutch onion season. The onion supply is shrinking, but it is not yet finished. What is the sentiment on the market, and what are the prices doing?
It is still expected that there will be 3 to 5 weeks Dutch onions will be available. In order to be able to serve the fixed destinations for a long time, stocks are spread out as much as possible. Onion exports are therefore not running very fast at the moment, which also means that work stocks are shifting.
Don't buy for top price
Most processors can still use new onions, but they do not buy from growers at top prices. The speculative aspect seems to have disappeared from the market, while major risks are no longer taken.
If the Dutch stock runs out in approximately 3 weeks, onions from various other countries will already be available. For example, Egypt and New Zealand already supply onions to Europe. Spain and Italy will also have their first harvest by then. However, whether these countries can fill the gap remains to be seen.
Prices
Bale prices have stabilized in recent weeks. The price range in the coarse grades is large, but still depends on the destination. The regional stock exchange in Emmeloord is currently the only one that is still trading. They are increasing the odds this week by €1 at the bottom and €1 at the top. €30 to €60 is quoted for both the 60% to 56% coarse and 59% upward.
