Hungary destroys batch of Dutch onions

June 6, 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 9 comments

The authorities in Hungary have ordered the destruction of a batch of onions from the Netherlands. This is because a sticker about the origin of the batches is missing. The Dutch MEPs are stunned and have asked for clarification from European Commissioner Phil Hogan.

About 2 weeks ago, 24.000 kilos of Dutch onions were destroyed in Hungary, because a sticker about the origin of the onions was missing. However, the transport papers clearly indicated the origin of the batch. In addition, the details of the lot were also in the digital control system.

This was reportedly the only reason for the destruction of the onions. This is remarkable, because the legislation states that if the batch does not meet administrative requirements, traders must have the opportunity to correct the errors. This opportunity was not given: the onions were destroyed immediately.

Current situation already tight
"Situations like this are especially undesirable this season, given that very few onions were available," write MEPs Bas Belder and Bert-Jan Ruissen (ChristenUnie-SGP) together with Annie Schreijer-Pierik (CDA) and Jan Huitema (VVD). a letter to the European Commission. When looking at current onion prices, the issue is about a significant amount.

"Destroying healthy onions because a sticker is missing, that goes against all principles," says Ruissen. "The European Commission has to get to the bottom of where the rules have gone off the rails. We really have to prevent this from happening again."

Gentlemen, the intent of the story is this: It is not appropriate to destroy food where millions of people are starving. And certainly not because of a missing sticker. There is also a shortage in the market. A farmer in Holland has grown these onions with passion and this deserves more respect.

I have a dark brown suspicion that an educated smartass will now come up with a proposal to introduce a new certificate for the umpteenth time. Beautiful onions from Holland, almost not sprayed, a flower border around the field and everyone a kiss before they go into the bag. Do brush every bag with a certified toothpaste with multifunctional antioxidants which should be used with a certified electric toothbrush with a solar-powered clockwise rotating head.

I'm glad that Dutch politicians are committed to bringing this debacle to the attention in Brussels and not, like many vinegar pissers on this forum under a pseudonym, blacken each other. My approach was to bring this to the attention of the media and to combat food waste and bureaucracy.

What are we talking about here. No, here in the Netherlands we are doing well with the distribution of seed potatoes that are not seed potatoes at all and how many thousands of tons are destroyed by the supermarkets every year because it is so-called past its best-before date. The cucumber season has started early this year.

This also happens regularly here in the Netherlands, purely because something is missing on the label, I have seen myself that a nice batch of peaches (60 tons! ) was destroyed because the flesh color was not stated on the box.
It must state whether they are white or yellow fleshy.
There is an average of 3 A4 sheets of each piece of fruit or vegetable with rules and conditions that it must meet, some rightly so, but many completely unnecessary.
