In Europe, the 2018 harvest is almost over and the first onions of the 2019 harvest are already on the market. What is the state of affairs in Europe?
Germany has experienced heavy showers in a number of regions. The precipitation has delayed the harvest of winter onions. It is now expected that the first winter onions can be harvested at the end of week 25. Insiders say that the total onion area in Germany next year will be comparable to this year.
Austria focuses on winter onions
The last onions of the 2018 harvest were sold in Austria last week. The onions were sold for prices comparable to bale prices in the Netherlands. The market is now focusing on winter onions. Due to the limited supply on the European market, these are currently sold for comparable prices.
French growers have started harvesting the first winter onions, although the harvest was interrupted by the rainfall in recent days. Prices are currently around €35.
Onion sets in Poland
For the last onions of the 2018 harvest, Polish supermarkets pay €67 to €75. The growth of onion onions in Poland is also fairly similar to the growth of onion onions in the Netherlands. On the other hand, winter onions are already being harvested in the south of Poland.
Depending on import
In Great Britain, the first local onions are expected in August. For the first time in years, Great Britain is completely dependent on onion imports. In addition, Spain has started selling early onions. The quality of the onions is reportedly good.
