Dutch onion packers currently have sufficient stocks available. However, the demand from exports is still not forthcoming for the time being.
Bale prices are making a significant correction. Within a few weeks these have dropped by half the price. Packers do not dare to mention specific prices because they consider it likely that bale prices will drop even further. In addition, packers are not forced to buy onions now. The yields of the onion sets that were set prematurely are good, meaning there is sufficient stock available.
Export
Exports have yet to get going. There is little demand for Dutch onions overseas. Many destinations in Africa still have their own harvest and there is product from Egypt in the way. There are a number of countries (including Ivory Coast) that purchase Dutch onions in small numbers. There are also a number of destinations in Central America that import Dutch onions on a piecemeal basis. In Europe, it is mainly Poland that purchases onions.
Because packers are not forced to buy onions, the onion onion market has come under pressure in recent weeks. There will first have to be an export demand to get the market going.
