With some rain, sun and moderate temperatures, the onion plots of De Gewastour have had a thriving week. How are the plots now on the eve of the scorching heat?
The pressure from thrips is low on the onion plot in Kortgene in Zeeland. Because the conditions were good, the thrips were sprayed for the third time last Saturday with Movento and Batavia.
The plot in Kortgene is also in good condition. On Saturday 20 July, 13 millimeters of precipitation fell. The onions are already bulbing quite a bit and are in much better shape compared to last year.
Sphere Formation
Where last week there was no 100% spherical formation on the plot in Kimswerd (Friesland), this is now the case. With 24,4 millimeters of precipitation over the last 7 days, the onions have had fertile weather. The first thrips spraying took place on Tuesday 16 July.
High foliage package
In Zweelo (Drenthe) the onions have grown fast. The foliage stands up to 90 centimeters high. A conscious choice was made for a vital foliage package, because the crop on this substrate often already dies before the onions start to spread. With a vital foliage package on the sandy soil, the onions have a nice green blanket for at least three weeks, resulting in extra tons and bare onions to prevent cracks.
High temperatures
All plots had to deal with temperatures above 26 degrees at an earlier stage (week 30). Despite the fact that some plots are in better condition than others, the plots have been able to withstand the high temperatures so far due to the subsequent precipitation. That puts them in a good position to survive the heat of the coming days, but whether this will succeed - depending on the duration of the heat wave and any precipitation that follows - remains to be seen.
