The first export figures for the 2019 cultivation season are known. Where do the first Dutch onions go and does the export get up to speed early?
The provisional export figures for week 27 show an export of 2.228 tons. With 9.942 tons, a lot more onions were exported in week 27 last season. A year earlier, the weekly volume was 9.887 tons.
In the past ten years, onions have only been exported in week 27 three times. The season therefore starts early. It is exported to 33 countries. Great Britain is the largest buyer of this with 671 tonnes. This is followed by Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago with 529 and 287 tonnes.
Growing season 2018
The seasonal total for the 2018 harvest was adjusted this week to 822.712 tons. On average, this amounts to an export of 15.822 tons of onions per week. As in previous years, the largest buyer in the 2018 season is Senegal. The West African country has been leading the Dutch onion market for many years.
In the 2018 growing season, the season's total amounts to 126.900 tons. Great Britain's seasonal total is 102.900 tonnes. This makes Great Britain the second best buyer of Dutch onions in the 2018 growing season. Ivory Coast completes the top three with 87.478 tons.
